I would like to welcome Jane Cadbury, aka Money Saving Jane at Utilities Warehouse Discount Club to the Single Mums Business Network. I’m so pleased that Jane has joined the SMBN as Single Parenting does not stop once the children have flown the nest…

Who is Jane Cadbury?
I arrived in Hereford from the depths of North Cumbria in July 2006, with two teenage children and a large van of household goods. We had left the children’s father behind (at my instigation), and rather “jumped into the deep end” of a town I knew little about! I knew three very good friends in the area, and each helped me discover my new life. My son did his GCSEs and moved onto the Sixth Form College – and did far better than if we had stayed in Cumbria. He has gone on to be successful in his career and has given me little cause for concern over the years. My daughter has been a different story! She went to a private school to do her A Levels and was very badly bullied! After a year, she went to the Sixth Form and was much happier, except didn’t appreciate living at home with those basic house rules (wash up your mugs etc!!). It ended up with her sofa surfing around Hereford which left me feeling vulnerable and disheartened – had I done the right thing? To cut a long story short, she walked out of college a week before her A levels and didn’t sit any exams! Now eight years on, she has just started her PhD in Osteology (old bones!).
Working around the children, I took a full-time job as an NVQ Assessor. I loved the work, but with poor pay and conditions, and the worries with my daughter, my health began to suffer again. After struggling on, I decided that working for someone else was no longer for me. It was time to go it alone. I had worked for myself before when I was married, but this time I was going to be on my own with no financial back-up. It was a difficult time, and some very quirky ideas were on the table, but common sense prevailed. I decided to become a Phoenix Trader – selling greeting cards at various fairs and fetes – and it was great, and I felt quite settled in the work. I started networking and meeting lots of interesting people, which then led to my current work selling utilities. I had just started getting into the work when I was stopped from driving because I kept falling asleep behind the wheel!! A bit of a danger really, so walking, buses, taxis and lifts from friends have made the roads safer over the last two years. I still sell cards, but due to the amount of stock I have to carry, I am very limited to where I can go. The utilities are much easier as I only have my tablet & diary to carry with me now, so I can get around much easier.
There’s plenty more to my story, so do ask, but this gives you an introduction to who I am.
